Bailey Sweeny has stunned the Dunlop Super2 Series with pole position for the weekend’s opening race at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
Sweeney was the surprise packet on Friday morning, provisionally qualifying third before topping the shootout ahead of Tickford Autosport’s Nash Morris.
Lochie Dalton (Blanchard Racing Team) slipped from provisional pole while. Ben Gomersall also went backwards from second to fourth.
Brad Jones Racing driver Brad Vaughan qualified fifth in the best of the Holden Commodore contingent.
Sweeny was the sole driver in the shootout to use the first set of tyres from qualifying, as opposed to the same second set that everyone finished the preceding session with.

“Awesome place to do it, especially in a Top 5 Shootout. I could actually watch how the session was going to play out,” said Sweeny.
“Having the Mountain to myself was pretty special. I was pretty happy with my lap in quali and I was pretty close on the used tyre.
“Absolutely rapt with my lap. I put it all on the line out there.”
The first portion of qualifying was a clean affair until the chequered flag when Matt Hillyer clouted the wall at the Cutting.
Despite damage to the Brad Jones Racing Holden Commodore, Hillyer was able to limp back to the pits.
Anderson Motorsport driver Ryan Tomsett failed to set a lap in qualifying due to a gremlin in his Commodore.
Series ring-ins Jonathon Webb (Anderson Motorsport) and Brendon Leitch (Team Kiwi Racing) qualified 12th and 14th respectively.
Race 1 of the Dunlop Super2 Series at the Repco Bathurst 1000 gets underway at 3:20pm AEDT.
